When a refrigerator or freezer runs but will not get cold, the fault can be in the sealed system: the compressor, the evaporator, the condenser and the refrigerant lines that join them.

About sealed system repair

What the sealed system is

Every refrigerator, freezer and wine cooler that runs on a compressor has one. The compressor pumps refrigerant around a closed loop. In the evaporator, inside the cabinet, the refrigerant soaks up heat; in the condenser, outside it, that heat goes into the room. The loop is sealed when the appliance is built, so it only needs work when part of it fails or leaks.

Diagnosis first

A dirty condenser, a failed fan, a defrost fault or a bad sensor can look just like a sealed system failure. Sub-Zero's own guidance for its EC40 code lists a sealed system, fan or sensor issue as possible causes. The diagnosis tells them apart before anyone opens the refrigerant circuit.

Why EPA 608 matters

Working on a refrigerant circuit is regulated. The EPA requires technicians who maintain, service, repair or dispose of equipment that could release refrigerants to be certified under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act. We are EPA 608 certified.

Repair or replace

If the repairs cost less than half of purchasing a new appliance, repair is most likely the smarter option. We quote the sealed system repair before any work starts, and if a new unit makes more sense, we say so.
